How To Fill A Bong (Correct Water Level)

Although it might not seem very hard, many people ask us how to fill a bong properly with the correct water level. And that’s not a strange question, because with the right water level you can really make the best use of your bong and enjoy it the way you’re supposed to!

How to fill a bong (correct water level)

How to fill a normal bong (beaker, straight)

Filling a "normal" bong, that doesn't have all kinds of percolators, diffusers and ornaments, is the easiest. So that's where we'll start. There are basically two things to look out for when filling a bong:

  • Do not overfill
  • Do not underfill

How far/high to fill a bong

So how do you know when you overfill or underfill your bong? That's what we will be talking about in the first part of this article. So how not to overfill a bong? Simple! Just look whether your bong has a kickhole or carbhole (air hole), a removable downstem or fixed downstem or even stemless, and the height of the bowl. In most cases, it's best to fill it up as far as you can, without the water causing any trouble. So what does that mean? Fill it up as far as possible (so that the downstem, if you have one, is fully underwater), but make sure the water does not flow out of the air hole, up through the bowl (making your herbs wet) or splashing into your mouth. Easy, right? So what about underfilling? As we said, it's best to fill a bong as far/high as possible, so that the downstem is sufficiently underwater. The water is there to cool your smoke, and without the right amount of water, your bong loses effectiveness.

How to fill a percolator bong

The same principles apply to filling a percolator bong. Make sure there is a sufficient amount of water in your bong to make it cool properly and function well. But how do you fill a percolator bong? What is the right water level for a percolator?

Filling a percolator bong is easy. Most percolators are "tree percs", and should be filled from the top. Just pour in some water through the percolator until you believe there is enough water in the lower smoke/water chamber. It just flows through the percolator into the lower chamber. When that's taken care of, the percolator is often half-full with water. Some people can't manage to get their percolator any more than half full. What are they doing wrong? They're doing it too fast! When the water just keeps flowing through and you can't get the percolator completely full of water, try doing it more slowly, so that the water isn't pushed or sucked down by the changing pressure levels in the different chambers of your bong. It's really easy!

There are more different types of diffusers and percolators (such as cage percs, showerhead percolators etc.), but there shouldn't be any issues filling those. Make sure they're fully under water, and they will work wonders!

How to fill a bong with two percolators or multi-perc

Filling a multi perc bong is exactly the same as filling a single percolator bong. Just pour the water in slowly, and even a two year old child could do it (we're not saying you should let your little two-year-old play with a bong, though...).

How to fill a HoneyComb bong

Filling a HoneyComb bong is just a bit more tricky than filling a regular bong or a tree perc bong. But in most cases, you should make sure the water level is just below or just above the HoneyComb disc, depending on your exact style and type of bong. If you're wondering how to fill a three-disc multi-HoneyComb-bong, wonder no longer: you should make sure that at least two discs are fully underwater if your bong permits it. It is always better to have a bit more water in than not enough, and if you have too much, just throw some out!

Best things to fill a bong with

But why fill your bong with regular water like everyone else, if there are other options? Perhaps there are better things to fill your bong with. There are a few things below of which people always ask us whether they can fill their bong with it.

Can you fill a bong with beer?

Let’s start with one of the most popular products around the world: BEER! Can you fill your bong with a nice cold beer? In short: yes, you can! There are many people who really enjoy the flavor of their favourite beer brand combined with their favourite herbs. Is it toxic or bad for you? As long as you’re using fresh beer, you should be fine. There will only be a very tiny amount of alcohol coming into your mouth or lungs, if any, so that’s not a problem. Just make sure that you throw it out before it gets bad, or ideally change it after every bong hit.

Can you fill a bong with soda?

There are countless people around the world who wonder whether or not you can fill a bong with soda or Gatorade. So can you? Of course you can, and with the right beverage you can really enhance the flavor of your bong hit! But there are also some downsides, the first one being that sweet beverages full of sticky sugar can make the bong a lot dirtier than with regular water. So be sure to clean it regularly if you’re putting soda, Gatorade or other soft drinks in your bong so that it stays in optimal condition. Another possible downside is that the THC and other cannabinoids in your smoke could get diluted, meaning the herb is less effective. Although this is surely possible, there is very little to no evidence that drinks with sugar actually decrease the effect of your herbs. We’d say: if you like the flavor, just do it!

Can you fill a bong with vodka?

Now, filling your bong with beer might not be an issue, but what about something stronger? Can you fill a bong with vodka, or whiskey? It won’t kill you, but unlike beer, this COULD get you tipsy or even drunk. Combining alcohol with cannabis is not a great idea for everyone, so if you’re worried about that, I wouldn’t recommend it. But will it really get you drunk? That depends on a lot of things, mostly your own body, but it CAN. Filling a bong with alcohol or vodka does have one big advantage, however: it keeps your bong cleaner! Because the dirt that normally settles on the glass doesn’t get the chance to stick to the wall, you can easily rinse it out after hitting the bong! Now we’re not saying everyone should fill their bong with alcohol, but it does have one big advantage! Just like soda, however, there is a chance that it will reduce the effect of your precious herbs. CAUTION: If you fill  bong with alcohol, make sure it's not too strong. There is the possible danger of sucking fire through a combustible liquid. Anything above 80 proof will pretty much start on fire with the slightest of provocation. Regular vodka of 40 to 50 percent alcohol should not combust, however.

Can you fill a bong with tea?

In today's age, there are countless different varieties of tea available with the most crazy flavours you can imagine. So can you fill a bong with tea? There is nothing wrong with filling your bong with tea, and it can provide an astonishing smoking experience. There is one VERY imporant thing with smoking bongs with tea, though: tea in a bong will start forming mold incredibly quickly, so be sure to change your bong water (or bong tea) at least once a day!
