How & Where To Buy WEED in MADRID (Spain)

If you’re a stoner visiting Madrid, you might be wondering how and where to buy weed in Madrid (Spain). Luckily for you, there are many places where you can buy cannabis (legally). In this article we explain the best ways to buy and smoke marijuana in the capital of Spain. We also answer some other important questions, such as: Is it legal to smoke indoors in Madrid? And is it legal to smoke on the streets of Madrid? If not, what are the fines?

Is cannabis legal in Madrid, Spain?

There is no short and simple answer to the question whether or not cannabis is legal in Spain. It is still (highly) illegal to sell cannabis in Spain. However, cannabis possession for personal use is not illegal in Spain on private property. You are allowed to smoke marijuana in the privacy of your own home, and you are even allowed to grow up to two plants per household in private properties out of the public view.

Smoking cannabis on the streets of Madrid is something that happens quite a lot: if you walk through the city, you will surely encounter the smell of burning cannabis in many places. But although it is fairly common to smoke outside in public in Madrid, the police can fine you and take possession of your herbs.

It is also legal to sell and buy bongs and other cannabis paraphernalia (such as pipes, cannabis seeds, CBD oil) in Spain. These products are easy to find throughout the city of Madrid, and can also be ordered online legally (take a look at our assortment for online orders delivered to your doorstep in Madrid).

Is it legal to buy weed in Madrid?

There are several ways to buy weed in Madrid, and it may be surprising to you that it is possible to buy weed legally in the city. The most obvious and easy to way get marijuana in Madrid is to visit one of the so-called “smoke shops” or CBD shops, of which there are about a dozen in Madrid. These are fully legal shops that sell legal cannabis openly without any memberships or registration required, although the cannabis that is sold here contains (almost) no THC (less than 0,2%) – making it completely legal.

How good is the quality of weed in Madrid?

The overall quality of weed in Madrid is quite good. There are many people growing small amounts of cannabis with the intention of selling it (or at least part of the harvest), and as a result there is a lot of weed available for sale. Thanks to the good climate and the good availability of growing supplies such as high-quality seeds, nutrients and grow lights, most (illegal) dealers sell weed of fairly good to really high quality. Please be aware that the quality can range from very bad to very good, and you’re never really sure what you’re buying from an unknown dealer.

The legal CBD-weed that you can buy in Madrid is usually imported from Italy or Switzerland, where it’s cultivated in advanced growing facilities. Therefore, the quality of these products is usually very good, but because these CBD-varieties lack the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, it won’t get you high.

What are the prices of weed in Madrid, spain?

The prices of cannabis in Madrid vary widely, but are not very high (compared to the Netherlands, for example). Most dealers sell their weed for about €5,- per gram, depending on the quality and quantity you’re buying. If you buy more than just one or two grams, there’s usually some discount involved. These prices are similar on the Canary Islands and in Benidorm.

If you’re a tourist, be aware that most dealers will try to sell you their weed at higher prices. It’s always a good idea to bargain and never accept the first price that you’re offered on the streets. Especially if you don’t speak any Spanish, expect to be ripped off, albeit only slightly. If the dealer is asking €10 per gram or even more, be sure to tell him that this is too high and you know the real prices. But be aware that real top-notch weed can cost a little more than the average yerba you will find on the streets, so in some cases €10 per gram may be a good price (but more often than not, you should be able to find good weed at lower prices than this).

In the CBD-weed shops, the prices also range from about €5 to about €15 per gram. If you’re looking to buy CBD-weed in Madrid for medicinal purposes, it may be worth paying prices on the high side to get weed with a higher percentage of CBD. Otherwise, the main thing that you’re looking for is a good flavor, and most low-priced CBD-varieties will taste just as good as the more expensive ones.

Buying weed from a dealer in Madrid

We have already said that it’s illegal to sell weed in Spain, but there are dealers selling weed illegally anyway (like in nearly every other country around the world). So where do I find them?

Although we cannot give precise information, your best bet to buy weed from a dealer in Madrid is to ask some locals. Restaurant owners, people working in smoke shops, or just random Spanish people on the street will definitely be able to point you in the right direction. Especially in touristic locations such as parks, there will be people selling cannabis illegally.

The two pictures below show two different varieties of "real" marijuana that we bought from a dealer in Madrid that was recommended to us by a local resident. The quality and flavour were not disappointing, and the price was fairly low at €5 per gram.

How to buy weed legally in Madrid

There are basically two ways to buy weed legally in Madrid.

  1. Buying weed from a CBD-shop (weed without THC).

Because cannabis without THC is not prohibit by Spanish law (neither by most other European countries), it is legal to buy this product over-the-counter in the stores that sell this throughout the city. It is very easy to find, and the quality and flavor are usually good, although this product won’t get you high like normal weed that does contain THC. CBD is another cannabinoid that can relax you and have some minimal effects, but it won’t get you high like THC.

  1. Buying weed from a cannabis social club.

Social clubs in Spain are sometimes compared to coffeeshops in the Netherlands, where you can (sort of) legally buy and smoke real cannabis that DOES contain the psychoactive ingredient THC. In Barcelona there are over a hundred social clubs, so cannabis in basically available everywhere. But in Madrid (2021), this seems to be a different story. Where are the cannabis social clubs in Madrid? Locals tell us that most, if not all, of the cannabis social clubs in Madrid have been closed down. There’s also stories of police officers waiting outside of the social clubs for people to come out and search them for any weed (that’s illegal to carry on the streets) in order to take away the weed and give a them a fine. There is basically no news to be found about these cannabis social clubs in Madrid from after 2019, so they seem to have disappeared or at least gone very private. To buy weed from a social club in Spain, you must also be introduced by an existing member of the club. So even if you’re able to find a club that’s still open, you need to know a local that can introduce you before you can buy anything or come inside to smoke. This basically eliminates the option of cannabis social clubs for tourist or temporary visitors of the city, and leaves you with only two choices: buying CBD-weed from a legal store, or buying “real” cannabis illegally from a dealer.

Is it legal to carry weed on you in Madrid?

In public, it is not legal to carry weed on you in Madrid, or anywhere else in Spain. According to Spanish law, the police is not allowed to search inside your underwear without a warrant, so that may be sort of a legal loophole to safely carry weed in public. In private, however, it should not be any problem at all to have a few grams of weed or hash on you.

If you get caught with small amounts in public, there will usually be nothing more than a fine and the police taking possession of your weed, but it’s still illegal.

Can I take cannabis with me back home from Madrid?

If you’re on vacation in Spain and you’ve bought a little more weed than you really needed, it may be tempting to take it back home with you. Please never do this: it is illegal to traffic cannabis from Spain into other countries, and the consequences can be big. Taking cannabis back home with you to another country is a bad idea. It’s just not worth it.

What is cannabis called in Spain? (other names)

What is the best name for cannabis in Spanish? How do they know what I'm talking about? Well, you could just say weed and make some creative gestures, most people will surely understand you. If you want to sound more like a real Spanish stoner, consider using one of these other names for weed in Spain:

Yerba (Hierba), Ganja, Weed, Marihuana (Mari), Grifa

A joint is called “un porro”, “un leño”, “un bate”, “canuto”.

Where to buy weed in Madrid legally (the best CBD shops in Madrid)

There are over a dozen “CBD-shops” in Madrid that sell weed over the counter without any prescriptions, restrictions or residency laws. These products are sold as souvenirs and the packaging usually says that it’s not intended to be smoked, but of course that’s exactly what people will do. To find one of these shops selling CBD weed, simply go to Google Maps and enter “CBD”. Most shops will pop up, and there are some more that will pop up if you enter a different search term such as “weed” or “cannabis”. But to make things easy, here’s a list of some cannabis shops in Madrid that we visited, including pictures and a short description of the products that they sell.

Cannabis Store Amsterdam in Madrid (CBD Weed Shop)

Cannabis Store Amsterdam may be the most beautiful chain of CBD shops in Madrid. You can buy many different strains of legal CBD weed in this shop, without registering or being a resident of Spain. All you need to do is say what you want, pay, and that's it!

There are various locations of Cannabis Store Amsterdam around Madrid, as it is a chain with more than 100 franchise stores throughout Europe. We visited two of their shops in Madrid: the café version in the center of the city (near Plaza Callao) where you can enjoy a cup of (cannabis-)coffee on the terrace in this beautiful spot in the city - and the smaller version on Calle Montera without the coffee bar and terrace. Both locations sell CBD flowers, pre-rolled CBD joints, moonrocks, CBD hash, CBD oil (and other legal cannabis oils), CBD edibles (such as cookies, brownies, lollipops and tea). The packaging and overall presentation of the products is very attractive, as are the names of the legal CBD weed varieties (Purple Haze, Ice Rock, Kritical, Gorilla Glue, AK-47, Amnesia, American Dream, to name a few). Paraphernalia such as weed grinders, blunt wraps (weed cigar wraps), rolling papers, ash trays, rolling trays, lighters and pipes are also available.

The pictures below were taken at Cannabis Store Amsterdam located in the city centre around the corner of Plaza Callao (Calle Preciados 33)

Flower Farm CBD Shop

Flower Farm CBD Shop is easy to find in Madrid, because they have many stores throughout the city centre. With a wide range of CBD flowers (CBD weed for smoking or vaporizing), CBD hash, CBD oils, CBD creams, moonrocks and CBD vape cartridges, they have something in stock for every kind of cannabis enthusiast.

We visited the Flower Farm Retiro branch, right next to the Ibiza metro station and the famous "Parque De El Retiro" (Retiro Park). The central location makes it very easy to find and access the store, and if you have an electric or hybrid car you can park right in front (if there are parking spaces available on the street, that is...). If you're going for a walk through this part of Madrid, you're going to have a very nice day with the numerous things to find in the area: the park itself of course, but also the National Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) with billions of dollars worth of beautiful art; the Royal Botanic Garden; and a wide array of fantastic bars and restaurants. In other words: going by this store gives you the opportunity to see a very beautiful and interesting part of Madrid.

The weed that we bought from Flower Farm Madrid tasted very nice (Lemon Haze recommended to us by the store clerk) and was not harsh on the lungs, although the lemon flavour seemed to be a little too strong to be natural. That doesn't spoil the smoking experience, however. Many people would actually prefer some added fruit flavour. We also got some CBD oil, however, it's a little too early for us to draw any conclusions about this product.

One thing that we didn't try was the hash (hashish) that you can buy in Flower Farm CBD Shop Madrid. There are many different varieties, such as Manali Cream, Maroc, various types of Moonrock (CBD bud rolled in hash oil and covered in trichomes or crystals), Black Afghan and Red Congo.

Eleva Store Flores Aromáticas (CBD Weed Shop)

The Eleva Store "Flores Aromáticas" was closed when we tried to visit, but we were able to take some pictures of their modern and sleek interior from the outside. It is a beautiful store that seems to focus mainly on CBD-weed and not much else, in the city centre next to Plaza de Tirso de Molina.

Address: CALLE DR. CORTEZO 9, 28012

Herbolario AURORA in Vallecas (CBD Weed Shop)

Unfortunately this store was closed when we tried to visit it, but from the outside it looks like an interesting old-school shop. At Herbolario AURORA you can buy legal CBD marihuana, cannabis oil / CBD oil, and other natural products. Their website even mentions Reiki therapy, so this seems to be more of a "hippy kind of store". Because we weren't able to enter the shop when we were in Vallecas, we cannot tell you whether the prices and quality of their legal cannabis are any good.

It also seems like there is a San Pedro cactus (mescaline cactus) in front of the window. There's nothing on their website about mescaline cacti such as San Pedro, Bolivian Torch and Peyote, but this may be the right place to look if that's what you're after.

Opening times:

  • 9:30 - 14:00 and 17:00 - 20:30 (monday to friday),
  • 9:30 - 14:00 (saturday), closed on sunday.

LEGALIZE Madrid CBD store (CBD Weed Shop)

The LEGALIZE Madrid CBD store is a great place to buy legal cannabis in Madrid. There's over a dozen varieties of CBD weed and a few varieties of CBD Hashish (has) available, and you can see everything they have for sale through a glass counter. This makes it easy to make the right choice, although it's a shame that this way you cannot decide based on smell like in many Dutch coffeeshops. If you're looking for medical marijuana or medical cannabis oil (CBD oil, CBG oil in various strengths and quantities), you should definitely drop by Legalize Madrid to have a look at their large selection of these products. There's also a lot of CBD creams and skincare products, CBD foods such as cookies and tea, and basically anything else you can imagine with CBD. Even CBD vapes!

If you're a smoker, you can also find all the essential smoking gear at Legalize. The most popular (kingsize) rolling papers, such as Smoking Brown, RAW papers and Beuz rolling papers, as well as Cyclone blunts are available here. Grinders, lighters, filters, basically everything you need. They even have some nice bongs for sale, although you may be better off having a look at our own assortment if that's what you're looking for :)

You can even order CBD weed online through their website.

Green Shine CBD Shop (CBD oils, cremes, gifts and toys)

Unfortunately this shop was closed when we tried to visit it. It seems like Green Shine CBD Shop in Madrid sells many cannabis-related products such as cannabis oil, candles and cosmetics, but no legal CBD flowers or joints. But maybe they do, we can't tell you that for certain. If you want to find out, why don't you drop by?

Address: Calle Minas 11, 28004, Madrid

Parafernali@ Grow Shop

The Parafernali@ Grow Shop in Madrid does not sell any CBD cannabis or hash, and focuses mainly on selling growing products for the home grower looking to cultivate their own cannabis. In this shop you can expect to find many different strains of seeds, plant nutrients, soil, grow tents and all other growing supplies you may need.

For the smoker or cannabis user, there are also many interesting products in this store. Parafernali@ has a fairly large collection of bongs, small pipes, and vaporizers. What we thought was very interesting, is that there are also some (basic) bong downstems and bong bowls for sale in this store. That may come in very handy if you drop your downstem and need a new one quickly. If you're willing to wait a few days, you may be better off having a look at Bongify's large selection of bong bowls and bong downstems. Another interesting thing to be found in this shop, is their selection of oil rigs / dab pipes.

There are two Parafernali@ Grow Shops in Madrid:

  • Calle Ribera de curtidores 5
  • Calle del Espíritu Santo 2

Buying rolling papers, tips (filters) and more paraphernalia: TABACOS (tobacco store)

There are about twenty (or more) Tabacos stores in Madrid: these are typical tobacco / cigar / cigarette shops for the ordinary smoker. Many Tabacos stores also have weed paraphernalia, such as rolling papers and tips for weed, grinders, ash trays, glass pipes and small bongs. There's also various shishas or hookahs available in most Tabacos stores. It's also a great place to buy cigars in Madrid, as most of the typical Spanish cigars such as Farias and El Guajiro are available at Tabacos.

The pictures below were taken at Tabacos Calle del Dr Cortezo, 17, 28012 Madrid, near Plaza de Tirso de Molina.
