The first step is to fill the precooler with water. The smoke enters the precooler through the vertical "downstem" that ends in a showerhead diffuser with multiple slits. This diffuser spreads the smoke through the water and enlarges the surface area of the smoke, making the water cool and filter the smoke much more effectively. Then, almost immediately after the showerhead diffuser, the smoke goes through the so-called "HoneyComb Perc" which has a similar function. The result: the smoke that goes out of the precooler and into the bong is already cooled and filtered, even before it enters the bong! A lot of the tar remains in the precooler, while the bong stays cleaner. But more importantly: the smoke is incredibly smooth and has a much better taste.
